Bright & Beautiful Moments
Dear Cherished Customers,
Khamit Kinks has come to the end of the road. After 40 years in the natural hair business, we’re closing our doors. As one of the pioneers of professional care of natural hair, Khamit Kinks’ journey has been an incredible one! For me, it meant evolving from a Howard University student with a summer job braiding hair to operating from my Harlem apartment to the Brownstone on Halsey Street, then the leap to TriBeCa in 1997. In 2006 we crossed the bridge back to Brooklyn’s Gold Street, and our last move was to Atlantic Avenue.
Being featured in Essence magazine in 1990 changed Khamit Kinks overnight. Styling the hair of Stevie Wonder, Oprah Winfrey, Iman, Terry McMillan, Lennie Kravitz, Angela Bassett, Solange, Teyonah Parris, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Alfre Woodard, Kara Walker, Susan-Lori Parks, Jacqueline Woodson, Chirlane McCray, and countless others, have all been part of this incredible journey.
While all that was wonderful, what mattered most was the love, the encouragement, and support we enjoyed from our community of loyal customers.
You helped Khamit Kinks to play a role in changing the way we Black women see ourselves — and how we feel about the natural texture of our hair. I believe this impacted the world! Being of African descent, we were already magical – embracing our natural hair just brought that historical greatness to the fore and the consciousness of the world. This impact I cherish most about our journey.
When one door closes, another door opens, so– onwards and upwards! I’ll be, among other things, continuing production of my Anu Essentials line of natural Hair Oils, the relaunching of Anu Essentials Hair Products, as well as continuing to offer natural perfumes and body products. You can explore them, and reach me, at www.anuessentials.com.
It’s time to pass the baton. With 20 years as Manager at Khamit Kinks, Taeisha Black has more than proven her dedication. It’s been her goal to have her own salon one day and that time has arrived. Taeisha’s love of the hair business and hairstyling as an art form, have long been her inspiration. As a licensed cosmetologist, trichologist and colorist, she’s a practiced and professional expert. Also, her skills as a consultant are informed by both hands-on experience and keen insight into the true needs and desires of clients.
I’ll share a follow up with more details soon about Taeisha’s new salon and the ways our beautiful community can support her new journey.
In the interim, Taeisha and her team are temporarily located at 228 Livingston Street, 2nd floor, between Bond and Hoyt. You may book your appointments by calling 718-395-1200 or emailing TaeishaBlack@gmail.com.
Many Thanks to you and all the best of bright and beautiful moments!
