The word Khamit is the original name for the land now called Egypt, which was renamed Egypt by the Greeks.  The root word Kham (kam, kem) means black.  The land was very fertile and therefore black in color. The word kinks describes the tightly coiled texture of the hair of most African people.  Hence, the name translate simply to African/ black hair. Question:
If my hair is permed how do I transition into natural hair without cutting all my hair off?

Answer:
When growing out your perm, it is not recommended to groom two distinct textures daily.  This will cause breakage. When you decide to let your perm grow out, the best solution is to wear your hair in a style that doesn't require daily grooming. You can achieve this by either getting a braided style or loose styles that don't require daily combing, brushing, or blow drying, like a Straw Set.

Every four weeks as the new growth gets longer an inch or so of the permed ends can be cut off until all your hair is virgin, natural hair.

Question:
I am trying to grow my hair out natural, how long does it take to grow out a perm?  Also, what type of hair products should I use during this process so that my hair does not look so dry?

Answer:
It only takes a few weeks for your scalp to start producing new growth.  Therefore, within a four week period you could have a quarter of an inch to an inch of new growth.  The question is how long do you want your new growth to be before you feel comfortable with cutting off your permed hair.  You could cut your processed hair off gradually or you could cut most of it off once you have a few inches of new growth.  Everyone's hair grows at a different rate.  It may take a year for one person to have 5 inches of new growth and another person could have 5 inches of new growth in six months.

One option is to wear you hair in braids or twists as your new growth grows in.

Question:
How can I Loc my hair if most of my hair is permed?

Answer:
Locs are best formed with naturally kinky hair. This is so because of the cylinder shape formation that occurs in naturally kinky hair. Therefore two options are available, either cut off all the permed hair or wait until you grow out all of the permed hair. For further information on locs, please refer to our loc and loc extensions page.

Question:
Can I get 2 Strand Twists with my own hair if it is permed?

Answer:
Two Strand Twists style without extensions is not recommended for permed hair. Many clients don't realize that the difference in textures between permed hair and natural hair makes for a very big difference in the outcome of the Two Strand Twists. With permed hair the Two Strand Twists hair does not stay twisted and the formation is flat and stringy looking unless extensions are added. Whenever a client with permed hair has insisted on getting Two Strand Twists without extensions, they have not been pleased with the results.

Question:
Can I get braids if I just recently permed my hair?

Answer:
In most cases permed hair will unravel and will not be able to maintain a braided or twisted style without the support of extension hair.

Question:
Can I shampoo my weave?

Answer:
It depends on the quality of the human hair used. Typically human hair that is mass produced like the hair from Korea, does not do well with water. When using Korean human hair it is recommended that a dry shampoo is used to clean your scalp. A dry shampoo consists of cleansing the scalp with a damp cloth for several rounds using different cleansing ingredients.

Question:
Please give me a dollar amount or percentage of how much to tip the Stylist who serviced my hair.

Answer:
Tipping is primarily a personal decision. However, there are a few guidelines to consider; some tip based on the same percentage point as when dining i.e. 16% for good service and 20% for excellent service. Or for short services and/or shampoos, some clients offer between $5 and $10. For longer services such as single braiding, weaves, and loc extensions $30-$50 is the average.

Question:
I am a Natural Hair Care Stylist.  Should I get a Cosmetology license?

Answer:
My professional recommendation is to go to Cosmetology School and acquire a cosmetology license.  This will give you the knowledge to service an array of clients who may not have natural hair yet but who are interested in making that change.  In addition to learning how to process hair chemically, you also taught color theory and application, the foundations of styling hair, along with Trichology– the science of hair and much more.  The education you’ll received at Cosmetology school is something you’ll always be applying in your service to clients.   The more knowledge you have, the more you’ll be able to assist them.  In addition, you will have many clients with natural hair, locs and etc, who will want to color their hair.  Coloring is a chemical procedure and all states require that you are licensed to color hair professionally.  In the long run, the education and the license will more than pay for itself.
