In Fall 2006, Khamit Kinks moved from Manhattan to return to its Brooklyn roots, completing a circular journey begun in 1989, when it first opened in a Brooklyn brownstone. By 1996 the business had outgrown that shop and moved to TriBeCa, where it thrived for a decade. The salon has as a roster of loyal clients and high-profile devotees. Celebrity clients have included Stevie Wonder, Oprah Winfrey, Terry McMillan, Angela Bassett, Lenny Kravitz, Queen Latifah and many others. New clients also routinely book appointments from Japan, England, the Caribbean and other places across the globe.
The salon also introduced several popular styles, including Casamas Braids, Senegalese Twists, Goddess Braids, Cherokee, Trini Braids, Baby Curl Twist and the list goes on. Khamit Kinks’ styles have graced the front page of The New York Times and the covers and pages of Essence Magazine and many industry publications. The salon has provided stylist services for films and fashion shows and has been featured on The View, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and other TV shows, including network and other news programs on NY-1, CNN, FOX-5 and TV Japan.
In the beginning of her career Anu created a line of all-natural hair oils and which later included body products to rave reviews. Interested not only in healthy hair, Anu has been committed to a healthy lifestyle for over twenty years. As a Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor, Anu makes a concerted effort to encourage both staff and clients to practice healthy eating and living habits for a healthy life and healthy hair.
